Aug 16 - Chopper back to Nanuq/Churchill Town Day 1

We woke up to wind hitting the sides of our tents, awakening us for the big chopper day. As exciting moments from Nester 1 simmered down to just memories, we feasted on fresh picked blueberry pancakes and breakfast burritos. After hearing our long awaited helicopter groups, we waited for the first chopper to arrive, full of eager college students who were taking our place. We ended up with a smaller helicopter than the first time we flew, but it was actually super cool! It made a movie style entrance, flying in fast and low, and smoothly navigating onto the ground we called home. Eventually we switched to the larger chopper, and everyone got to Camp Nanuq safe and sound.

The last group of people to board the chopper were waiting at Nester One for a few hours because of the sheer amount of stuff we had to transport out of camp. They played cards and got to talk to the university students who were arriving as they waited.

After we all reunited and gathered our gear, we journeyed into the town of Churchill, but of course we had to stop at some of the outstanding attractions along the way: the airplane crash called Miss Piggy and the Polar Bear Holding Facility. Once we arrived in town we enjoyed delicious milkshakes from the Lazy Bear Cafe, then made our way to the town centre complex where our last showers before the train trip commenced. Some swam in the pool, while others played pool. After hot showers, I (Tessa) battled Jonah in an intense game of ping pong, only loosing by 2 points which is quite impressive considering he has taken ping pong lessons in the past! After raiding the canteen full of unfamiliar treats, we left the complex, following the bumpy road to Cape Merry. The sun painted a beautiful background for the smooth white belugas that breached from the dark waters of the Churchill river. Back at Nanuq we enjoyed warm bowls of chili and mashed potatoes, ending the night with a clothing trade frenzy between the JCRs and Baltimore students.

Peace out besties!
