Aug 15 - Nester Day 7/Final Full Day
Today got off to a slow start with a lazy 9am breakfast of eggs and hash browns. It was rainy, foggy, and smoky, so the adults decided that we would stay at camp since we had been so efficient with our data collection so far. After breakfast the JCRs came together to work on a presentation while the Baltimore students worked on chores around camp.
After eating a Canadian classic Kraft Dinner for lunch, everyone gathered in the classroom for the JCR presentation. They explained the government funded JCR program and how it connects to military service. They also described some of the trips they have taken including rock climbing and hiking in the mountains of British Colombia and driving snowmobiles (skidoos) for hours to the north river. For dinner we rolled dough to craft personal pizzas and topped them with everything from snow goose to pineapple. A few students secretly prepared a scavenger hunt for the group after dinner which concluded in the finding of Kirsten’s birthday cake in the oven.
Everyone sang happy birthday and polished off the cake before doing their dishes and getting ready for bed. It was at this point, however, that some of us realized the damage the unexpected rain had caused. We discovered wet clothes, damp mattresses, and even a blown over tent. The night was cold and windy, but reminded us that we are in fact in the arctic, something the weather from previous days had made us forget.
Thanks,
Alex
