Aug 6- Last Train Day/Camp Nanuq Day 1!
The Baltimore students woke up this morning for the last time on the train with just enough time for some last minute repacking and a quick breakfast of bagels and leftover pizza before we arrived in Churchill. We finally made it to the train station where we met up with the JCRs(Junior Canadian Rangers) and all started to get to know each other as we packed all our supplies into two vans and drove to Camp Nanuq, where we would be staying for the next few days. We were all excited to explore the camp, however upon arriving we quickly realized that we did not have the key. We all unloaded our supplies and played some volleyball while we waited for Julie to drive into town And retrieve the key.
When Julie returned, we began the process of setting up the camp and preparing for the next few days. We started by setting up all of our bunks and then some people worked on setting up the kitchen while others retrieved supplies from the Churchill Northern Studies Center. When we returned we had lunch which consisted of more leftover pizza, and then had a group meeting to talk about gun and bear safety and how relate all our gear for the next day. We passed out waders and other supplies and made sure we could all work together to carry all the group gear we needed.
Once we were prepared, we all gathered for some card games and then grilled burgers, hotdogs and marshmallows over a fire for dinner. After dinner, we went on a sunset safari to the coast of the Hudson Bay and enjoyed the view while we searched for rocks to use for a project we would do later. When we arrived home, we realized we had one more surprise from the bonding group: over the next few days we would be playing a game of the ISAMR Olympics! We received our teams, and then competed in our first event, the human knot. Mostly this did not go very well as we could not get untangled properly, however one team was very successful. After this game it was nearing lights out time, so we all prepared for bed and went to sleep excited for the work we would be doing over the next few days.
