Blog Update August 17th
We’re back in Thompson! We woke up on the train this morning, and all remarked how much shorter the ride felt. We had breakfast together in the dining car before disembarking. Now we just need to fill about 12 hours before our bus leaves to go to the Winnipeg airport. We first found a lovely trail called the Millennium Trail (because we haven’t been hiking enough on this trip!).
The Millennium Trail was across from a construction site, so we quickly walked through the excavators to arrive at the trail(?), which looked like a rudimentary road into the wilderness. We are, however, experienced arctic explorers, so we proceeded on, climbed over a huge tree, and began walking and enjoying the water and nature of Thompson.
It was a little…disappointing. The air was heavy with sadness that our trip was coming to a close, (and not to be too picky) but the view really just didn’t come close to the beauty of Churchill.
After the trail, we went to Dairy Queen to cool off and reminisce about our time together. We were playful and laughing, but there was still an underlying feeling of sadness. We looked across the parking lot to Robin’s Donuts, where a week ago, we were frantically studying plants and talking with giddy expectation about our forthcoming adventure.
We then headed to the bowling alley and killed a little more time with a few rounds of bowling and some pizza. Before we knew it, it was time to head to the bus station.
We once again piled all our things (now notably fewer items because we ate all our food) onto the bus and packed inside. The bus was much more crowded than last time, with almost every seat taken. We grouped up and passed out. Goodbye Thompson!
