ArcticNet Day 1

Today was our first day at ArcticNet 2019. We left the place that we are staying, grabbed a quick breakfast and made our way over to the Halifax Conference Centre. The opening Plenary session was really interesting, we learned about ArcticNet and about new legislative work being done to protect the Arctic. We then had a break to go put up our poster.

Topical session were really interesting today and we mostly stuck to the Permafrost sessions. Throughout the day we saw 15 people speak about a variety of topics relating to the Permafrost. One that really stood out was one on the modelling of the changing Permafrost and all of the variables that need to be taken into account.

During lunch, we spent time speaking with a group who talks to Northerners about what they want to see in terms of legislation and trust to implement that. We then moved on to talk to a group that gets Northern Youth involved in research of their own. I spent a while talking to a 12th grader who was really interested in biofilms.

After the last topical session, we spent two hours standing by our poster and talking to people about it. A variety of different people came by including some from the other ISAMR group who is here from Winnipeg (they're presenting on whisker printing).

We finished the day with eating at a nice French restaurant.
